Cape Cod is known for many things: breathtaking beaches, quaint little towns and great seafood, to name just a few. The Lover’s Trail Guide to Cape Cod Stargazing Spots, will help you find that perfect spot to share a memory that will last a lifetime.

Here is a beauty on Cape Cod that can go overlooked. Or, more accurately, there’s another beauty above Cape Cod that can go overlooked: the starry night sky.

Located roughly 60 miles from the bright city lights of Boston and Providence, the Cape still enjoys some of the darkest night skies on the eastern seaboard.

And that makes for some amazing stargazing. and Frederick William House on Cape Cod has so many lovely adventures to experience in winter. Check out our calendar and book your room and start planning your getaway today!

When booking your stay at a bed and breakfast on Cape Cod, consider accommodations close to these picturesque beaches.

Some of the best places to go stargazing on Cape Cod include:

  • Cape Cod National Seashore: One of the darkest areas in Massachusetts, located in the Outer Cape, is Cape Cod National Seashore which encompasses the beaches of Truro and Wellfleet that are great for stargazing. Newcomb Hollow Beach and Marconi Beach are especially spectacular.

  • Red River Beach: A very dark location in Harwich.

  • Head of the Meadow Beach: A very dark location in Truro, which also allows bonfires.

  • Dowses Beach: A good place to go on clear, dark nights.

  • Lowell Park: A good place to go stargazing in Cotuit. Yes, it is a ball park, but the open field is huge and the sky is awesome on a dark night.

  • Pilgrim Heights: A location in Truro that's a few miles from any settlement.

  • Hardings Beach: Moving south towards the “elbow” of the Cape, you’ll enter the town of Chatham. The view from here is very dark, as you look out over Nantucket Sound. It is often packed with summer beachgoers during the day, empties out in the evening hours, leaving only the tranquil scenery of a star-filled sky accompanied by the sound of the surf. From here, the star clouds of Sagittarius and Scorpius glow in all their glory.

  • Nobska Beach: If you find yourself visiting the Upper Cape, check out the beaches near Nobska Lighthouse and Woods Hole.

While not quite as dark as the Outer Cape, the view south over Vineyard Sound is still impressive. From here, you can stargaze while watching the ferries and boats traveling back and forth to the island of Martha’s Vineyard.

Some tips for stargazing include:

  • Pick a place with as close to 180 degrees of sky as possible.

  • Avoid times when there's a bright moon in the sky.

  • Stargazing is best when the sun has set low enough below the horizon so that twilight doesn't affect observations.

  • Autumn, winter, and spring are the best times to go stargazing.
