Valentine’s Day Adventures You’ll BOTH Love

If you’re always seeking an excuse for an adventure with your other half, then look no further. I have compiled a list of Valentine’s Day adventures for romantic couples that I hope will make for a Valentine’s day to actually remember this year because it starts on a FRIDAY and Frederick William House on Cape Cod has so many lovely adventures to experience in winter. Check out our calendar and book your room and start planning your getaway today!

It also shouldn’t take a load of commercialization and a holiday pressure push for us to make the effort to plan something special for our significant other.

So, here are some ideas for fun and romantic adventures for February in Falmouth and Cape Cod.

10 Valentine’s Day adventures that you will both LOVE

Let me start out with…Love is Love. My suggestions can go anyway the stars will take us. So please apply the suggestions to your own perfect love story and leave behind those that don’t fit your lifestyle. One of my perfect Valentine’s Day adventures would be a night beach hike and sleeping under the stars with a glass of port and cheese! This idea is for the bit adventurous and those that like New England in February. Remember the German saying applies, there is no bad weather, only bad clothing! So get wrapped up and enjoy the views.

1.Go Geocaching

Bring out the child in your lover by setting a treasure hunt. Geocaching is a fun way to incorporate a bit of geeky tech into the adventure and makes it easy for you to set up and personalize. Once you’ve signed up on the Geocaching website, you can set up your own place to hide his ‘treasure’: a favorite viewpoint, the place you went on your first date together or somewhere you love and want your partner to experience too. Once you’ve hidden the gift, use the compass on your phone to identify the coordinates of the location. Use these and some fun/cryptic/silly/personal descriptions to send your partner on an adventure quest to remember.

PRO TIP: You can set waypoints on your treasure hunt via places of interest; coffee shop, picnic area, restaurant, mountain peak etc.

Check out our recommendations for restaurants on our Dining and Spirits page on Frederick William House’s home site for local resturant ideas to include or the ACTIVITIES on the Local Attractions page as well.

2. Plan a bike ride on the Shining Sea Bikeway located directly on the Inn’s property.

If your other half spends his weekends in lycra exploring the countryside on two wheels, then why not get out and join? Ride along the Cape Cod Coast and end it at Nobska Lighthouse or

PRO TIP: Plan a lunch stop at a good pub and give your better half free rein over bike chat levels! Pie in the Sky in Woods Hole is an excellent lunch stop for a warm up during your ride.

Put a little bit of love into your route planning by choosing roads that will map out the shape of a heart. At the end of the ride take out a hip flask of your partner’s favorite spirit (burbon or whisky) to celebrate the day and ask him/her to check your Stravastats (road bikers love a good stat). He/she will love them even more when he/she sees the shape of your heart showing just how much effort you have put into making road biking something that you cando as a couple.

3. Go on a canoeing or kayaking day trip

Valentine’s Day adventures don’t get much better than rowing on a river, Huckleberry Finn style. Even the cold of winter won’t stop a true adventurer from enjoying the tranquility of the water. Rent a canoe for the day from our local Cape Cod Kayaks and take your camping stove along to cook up a hot riverside lunch. Pre-make a hearty stew to reheat and enjoy with some crusty bread from Maison Villatte, the best French Bakery on the entire Cape, in my most humble opinion. Reminisce on all your past adventures together and planning your future ones over your warm meal on the outer banks of Cape Cod coastal bliss.

PRO TIP: If renting a kayak or canoe is proving more difficult to organize than it sounds, then maybe rent a rowing boat on a lake or river instead. Pack a traditional champagne picnic, basket and all, and enjoy relaxing under the comfort of a cosy blanket. Kayaks can be rented out directly at the Inn, and we can assist you in local spots to drop them. There is a beautiful pond across the street from the inn, inside Goodwill park called Grews pond that is fantastic for this activity. We actually walk them right over to that pond with little hand carts.

4. Plan an adventure film night

This is a good option if you don’t enjoy venturing out in bad weather. There are loads of free adventure films available online so with a little research and planning you and Netflix could put together an impressive and exciting programme. It’s also guaranteed to get the inspiration flowing for your next trip together, so the evening might even turn into an adventure planning session. Always fun!

Get some cross country ski and pond ice skating videos in the film lineup for an excuse to theme your evening around the snow scene. I’m thinking bobble hats, winter jumpers, meat fondue, Weissbier and finishing it off with a gourmet hot chocolate from Maison Villatte, the best French Bakery on the entire Cape.

PRO TIP: Make a proper event of it by writing out a programme and having an interval for dinner. Check out our recommendations for restaurants on our Dining and Spirits page on Frederick William House’s home site

5. Take a night hike and star gaze on the Cape Cod National Sea Shore

Yes, a microadventure! This is one for the real planners amongst you. Firstly you’ll need to pick a night when the weather looks clear. Next, research your hike and maybe take a recce during daylight hours to find a suitably romantic spot to set up your sleeping bags. Bring large thermoses of hot coffee or your favorite hot chocolate which can be equally as romantic as nighttime stargazing, so consider that when choosing your viewing point.

Once you’ve set up, surprise your love with a glass (or two) of port and a selection of his favorite cheeses while you watch the star show unfold. Check out our winter soup recipe recommendations for something a bit different. Most are light to carry, warming and super easy to make.

6. Take a hike to a remote beach or hillside and cook your lunch on a fire

Refer to our list of leagal bondfire beaches in cape cod. Such a romantic idea and an ideal opportunity to show your true inginuity. Wood collecting and fire starting and outdoor cooking in lay off site location is impressive when it is pulled off well. But don’t get too lost in your plans. Let your sensitive side shine too and maybe tone it down by cooking a fresh fish, lobster, or coastal local clams most likely collected on the very beach you find yourself on. Add some foil roasted vegetables to the meat feast. Bring plenty of blankets and a bottle of bubbly, and before you know it, your love will be snuggling in close to you.

PRO TIP: Make sure you pack some backup layers for your both and a flask of something hot. You may feel warm from all that hard work in making sure everything is just so. But your better half will be sitting still and cooling down fast.

7. Go horse riding

The romance of galloping through the open country with the wind in your hair is every riders dream.

Even better, bare-back along the beach…bring your own horses and stall them at a local barn. Check out horseandtravel.com for barns willing to accommodate your horses.

But in reality it’s actually pretty demanding and often uncomfortable if you’re not used to it. So if you are a novice rider start with a lesson or a low key pony trekking trip in some stunning terrain. Take a hip flask of her favorite tipple to calm the nerves and warm the belly and end the day with a home cooked steak at Liam McGuire’s Irish Pub!

PRO TIP: If sitting with a saddle between your legs for a few hours is new to you both then ease the aches and soothe the sores with a hot steamy bath to finish the day back in your cozy room at Frederick William House or sit in front of the fire in the Harborside Garden King Suite.

8. Make a picnic that tops all picnics.

If it’s chilly then put a hearty homemade soup in a flask and bring some hot chocolate to finish off. Have a go at making heart shaped sugar cookies or a heart shaped flat bread pizza.

Pack favorite snacks and round it off with a glass of warming red wine or hot blackcurrant cordial.

The stoker has the luxury of not needing to keep their eyes on the road so make sure you plan a scenic route with lots of variety and a sheltered viewpoint for your picnic stop.

9. Take a dawn run to a beautiful spot for sunrise

This might be along the Cape Cod Canal bridge trail or over a smaller Cape Cod Waterway, a Boston city view from a hilltop, your a Falmouth beach, a sea view from the cliffs near Nobska Lighthouse or maybe just the pretty pond, Grews Pond, across the street in Goodwill park. Wherever you chose to watch the sunrise together, make sure you know it’s somewhere your better half would chose themselves. Capeology lists some pretty spectacular spots…check there suggestions out HERE.

Brownie points for proving that you can get the weekend started without a lie-in ‘til noon.

10. Cider & Wine Tasting & MicroBrew Tap Rooms

For Cider that makes you tipsy, High Limb Cider is one of the best cider houses near Cape Cod.

We have our share of fanstastic little romantic spots to take in some yummy hand crafted ales in town. For the wine lovers, Cape Cod Winery is right in Falmouth a couple miles from the Inn. Bad Martha’s Micro Brewery has the best small batch handdcrafted ales and oven roasted pizza’s around in a beer garden setting that will relax any couple. Turo Vineyards has some breathtaking views and incredible tasting rooms. Naukabout Brewery and Taproom has a rustic down home vibe, and a lovely variety of handcrafted micro brew choices. Aquatic Brewing and Taproom is located on Main Street right in Falmouth if you want to stay steps away from the Inn.

PRO TIP: Book an Uber or a Lift to take you to the tasting rooms ahead of time so you don’t have to wait for your ride back to Frederick William House Bed & Breakfast in Falmouth Massachusetts at 594 Palmer Avenue, but do call us if you run into any issues with your ride (508)566-7582. We want to make sure your adventures end well and you return safely!
